Lions Opportunities for Youth

 

 Youth Programs The mission of Lions Opportunities for Youth is: To provide the young people of the world with opportunities for achievement, learning, contribution and service, individually and collectively, through sponsorship of activities identified as best practices in the field of youth development

 

Lions Opportunities for Youth Committees include:

Committees are organized at the club, district and multiple district levels. The committee includes chairpersons from all Lions youth programs.

HOBY Scholarships

HOBY is a Youth Development scholarship our Club gave to two sophomores at Buena High School. The seminars are for four days in June where life living leadership development opportunities are provided through an inter-active process with distinguished lecturer of the community from various sections. Through intense but informal panel discussions, Hugh O"Brian Youth participants get a look at their nation, its people, and their own roll in the world community.

 

International Lions Peace Poster
International Lions Peace Poster contest emphases the importance of peace, tolerance, international understanding to young people everywhere. The contest encourages young people, ages 11-13 to think about peace, creatively express what it means to them and the share their unique visions with the world. Our Club has held the contest in four or five schools each year since 1994. Each year has a different theme. Each winner is presented a monetary award. Our Club also displays the winners for each school in the hall of the Sierra Vista Public Library.

 

La Salida del Sol Lion Scholarships
We provide three one thousand dollar scholarships per academic year. Two of the scholarships are given to graduating seniors at Buena H.S. The third scholarship is given to a Cochise College continuing student. The students must have a 3.0 G.P.A. and show financial need. 
 
Cub & Boy Scouts
The La Salida del Sol Lions Club chartered Cub Scout Pack 408 in 1984 and has continued to support the pack with money and leadership. Boy Scouts of America is a family program designed to involve the parents and their children in important activities such as good citizenship, respect for nature, camping in the outdoors, respect for all people, providing education on such things as first aid, cooking, swimming, fishing etc. The La Salida Lions just chartered Boy Scout Troop 408 in 2007. The Troop is for older boys (11 through 18 years) and involve the boys in important learning activities such as survival in the outdoors, repealing, mountain climbing, knot tying, advanced first aid, proper use and firing of guns & bow and arrow, conservation, building trails and respect for wildlife etc. 
 
Camp Tatiyee
Camp Tatiyee was established by the Lions Club in 1958 for challenged individuals so disabled children and adults could enjoy a natural camping experience. It begin with one cabin that served 12 children and has grown to 4 dormitories that can serve over 600 campers per season. It's located in Pinetop-Lakeside, Arizona. The camp is open from June through the first week in August. There is no charge to the campers. It costs the Lions Club $650-dollars per camper which is raised by the Lions through club donations, and camperships ($650) paid by individuals and businesses. Flags for Kids
Lions Flag Day Program was endorsed as a Lions Club International project in 1978 as part of International Lions Children program. It promotes patriotism and respect for the American Flag in elementary schools of America. Out Lions Club presents patriotic programs in six schools in the Sierra Vista area. We present small American Flags and brochures, explaining the Flag. Millions of flags have been distributed over the years through various Lions Clubs in February or March.
